Hillgate Village, W8

This is a pretty but extremely expensive enclave of pastel-coloured terraced houses of varying sizes from very tiny to infinitely expanded. The streets in the village, comprising Hillgate Street, Hillgate Place, Uxbridge Street, Kensington Place, Campden Street, Jameson Street and Peel Street are situated behind Notting Hill Gate. 

Originally built around 1840 as workers’ cottages for farm labourers working in the fields near the original Gate toll-pike, the area was rundown and unfashionable until the 1980s when it was comprehensively gentrified. Now it is one of the most exclusive addresses in Kensington. The houses are ideal for busy people as mostly they  have no gardens but just a small back yard, although a few have roof gardens. Because of their small size and the fact the storeys are stacked on top of each other, the houses in Hillgate Village are not suitable for conversion into flats, and so most remain as whole houses.

Kensington Church Street with its many antique shops and restaurants is less than five minutes away and the expensive, celebrity-studded Campden Hill Road – famously the home of Harold Pinter and Antonia Fraster – is also in easy walking distance.   The arthouse cinemas the Gate and Coronet are at the top of Hillgate Village and Notting Hill Gate is full of every kind of high-end (and medium-end as well) retail outlet from a Marks and Spencer Simply Food to a branch of Phase Eight fashions, upmarket butcher’s such as Lidgate’s and loads of restaurants from pizza and noodle bars to small Italian bistros, the famous Kensington Place and Clark’s on Kensington Church Street.

The Portobello Market is in easy walking distance and on Saturdays and Sundays, Notting Hill Gate tube station pours out literally thousands of tourists and shoppers.

The experimental, recently much expanded Gate Theatre is just over the road, and is ideal if you like to watch plays in Russian or French or avant-garde works by new, untried dramatists. Very often, big acting names are attracted to the Gate. Literary enthusiasts are well catered for as there is a huge, flagship Waterstone’s on the corner of Notting Hill Gate and Kensington Church Street, where leading novelists and non-fiction writers often give talks and book signings in the evenings.

Nearby pubs include the Uxbridge Arms, Churchill Arms and Windsor Castle, all of which serve excellent beer and are more or less standing room only from about 6pm onwards. The Windsor Castle has a large beer garden which is incredibly popular in the Summer.
