Chelsea Harbour, SW10

This exclusive area is situated on the North Bank of the Thames and was built in the late 1980s by P&O, the cruise liner people. The development was begun in 1986 and finished just 12 months later.

It is accessed from the rather dreary Lots Road, so you get a wonderful surprise on entering this beautifully designed estate consisting of apartments, town houses, mews houses and terrace houses in a mixture of traditional and contemporary styles.

The only tower block on the estate is The Belvedere, 20 storeys high. Admiral Square is a mixture of town houses and mews houses, each with its own garage, so no worries about parking. The other residential developments in the Harbour are Carlyle Road, Kings Quay, Chelsea Crescent, The Quadrangle and Thames Quay.

There is also a hotel, offices and showrooms and the Harbour is the home of the Chelsea Design Centre.

The harbour itself is full of luxury yachts and speedboats and the whole development – at least on a sunny, sparkling day – looks a little like Monte Carlo.  In fact, the design of the Harbour was modelled on similar developments in Monaco, so if it reminds you of being in the Mediterranean, that is deliberate policy.

At the heart of the Harbour is the Marina, which is fast becoming one of the capital’s most famous maritime sites. Formerly a coal wharf, it is no longer a working harbour but a 60-berth marina containing vessels which mainly belong to the inhabitants of the Harbour. It is a celebrity hangout, glamorous, secure and secluded but with easy access to Kings Road, Chelsea Embankment, the West End and the City. Kings Road is at the top of Lots Road.

The Harbour Club was made famous as a fitness centre by Princess Diana.
