Fulham, SW6
Situated between Putney and Chelsea, Fulham has gradually worked its way up to become part of prime central London. During the early part of the 20th century it was a working-class area yet now it is one of the most expensive parts of London even though it is not well served by tube stations. The area received intense gentrification after the Second World War, as parts of it were extensively bombed.
Now, it is a leafy, confident, green suburb consisting of long streets of large Victorian and Edwardian houses, shorter streets of small terraced houses, modern townhouses, well-appointed apartment buildings and grand mansion blocks. Property-wise, Fulham has everything really and caters equally well for families, singles, couples, young professionals and older people either downsizing or upsizing.
Although Fulham is not a specially cool or trendy area, it has many famous residents including Jemima Khan, chef Antonio Carluccio, actor Leslie Grantham, socialite Lady Isabella Hervey, Judith Keppel, the first millionaire on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, former Sex Pistols singer Johnny Rotten and supernanny Jo Frost. The murdered television presenter Jill Dando lived in a large terraced house in Fulham and her alleged - now freed - attacker Barry George in a seedy flat nearby.
Fulham is also home to two premiership football clubs, Fulham Football Club stadium at Craven Cottage and the Chelsea Football Club stadium at Stamford Bridge. The areas round about these clubs can become extremely congested and busy when there is a home match. Marco Pierre White’s restaurant, Marco’s, is inside the entertainments centre at Stamford Bridge. There are also a number of residential apartments inside the stadium complex. These are highly prized, not surprisingly, by ardent football fans. You can take an organised tour around Fulham Football club stadium.
The Hurlingham, possibly the most famous sports club in the country, maybe the world, is also in Fulham and there is currently a 15-year waiting list for membership, although unlikely you would have to wait that long to join.
There is a cinema complex as part of the Fulham Broadway Centre.
Pubs: many, including The White Horse in Parsons Green, known locally as the Sloaney Pony for obvious reasons; The Pear Tree in Margravine Road; the Wilton in Dawes Road, The Eight Bells in Fulham High Street and The Elm in North End Road.
Another attraction of Fulham is the many open spaces and parks such as Bishops Park, Fulham Palace Gardens, Hurlingham Park, Eel Brook Common and Parsons Green.
Fulham is also an antique hunter’s paradise. There are many small antique shops and also the Lot’s Road auction house, cheaper and – to my mind- more interesting than the big Bond Street auction houses.
The area is also a foodie’s heaven, with organic butchers’ delicatessens and speciality shops, including: free range butchers A.A. King (30-34 New Kings Road, SW6) and The Parson’s Nose (733 Fulham Road, SW6); Megan’s Delicatessen (571 New Kings Road); Planet Organic (245 Effie Road) and the Imperial Wharf Farmer’s Market.
Late night venues include: Zulus (4 Fulham High Street); Octoberfest pub (678 -680 Fulham Road); Vingt Quatre (325 Fulham Road) and Elk Bar (587 Fulham Road).
Transport
Tubes: Fulham Broadway Underground station on the District Line; Putney Bridge Station, also District Line; Hammersmith for the Piccadilly, District, and Hammersmith and City Lines
Buses: Many bus routes along Fulham Palace Road, Fulham High Street, Dawes Road and Lillie Road
Resident Parking Permit: Yes, in all areas. Very difficult for non-residents to park at any time although numerous pay and display bays
Congestion Zone: No
