Brook Green W14 & W6

This is an upmarket area situated between Shepherds Bush and Hammersmith (behind Shepherd’s Bush Road,W14) and consists of both long and short streets of Victorian terrace houses plus some large, and rather imposing mansion blocks, such as Phoenix Lodge Mansions and Queens Mansions on the Green itself.

There is a wide choice of properties from large family houses with five or six bedrooms as located on Addison Gardens or over looking the green itself, to studios and one bedroom flats in tall Victorian conversions on Sinclair Road with more or less everything in between. Expect high-ceilinged mansion blocks and modern, purpose-built apartments and gated developments such as Windsor Way. There are also several streets of cute Victorian terraced cottages, many highly renovated and extended and infinitely desirable.

The area caters for all kinds of renters and buyers from families relocating to young professionals to young couples and retirees. French expatriate families are attracted here not least of all due to the the Ecole Jacques Prevert at 59 Brook Green. It is not a particularly busy or buzzy area but is handy, being very near to Central London but yet reasonably quiet and sedate.

Families are drawn to the area by the excellent local schools both private and state including Addison Primary School, Godolphin & Latymer School and the The Latymer Preparatory School as well as the French school, Ecole Franciase de Londres, Jacques Prevert, previously mentioned.

The main shopping area is Shepherds Bush Road which for day to day shopping has come up enormously in recent years). The shops are mainly small, individual outlets and include a trendy florist and fishmonger, Brooks Counter and Table Café and Delicatessen, a Café Rouge and a branch of Oliver Bonas, which is full of exciting clothes, furnishings and gift ideas. There is a large Tescos just of Shepherds Bush Road with ample parking.  The most upmarket restaurant is Snows on the Green. Well know gastro-pubs include the “Havelock” and ‘The Bird in Hand’ both on Masbro Road. The ‘The Queens Head’ on Brook Green is very popular with its traditional English pub feel and large beer garden.

Nearby King Street offers an M&S, Habitat and Sainsburys but there is not much else to gladden the eye, shopping-wise. On the newly refurbished square is the famous Lyric Theatre offering mainstream productions from the classics to the experimental.

You are only a very short bus or tube ride away from Kensington High Street’s shopping mecca. Actually High Street Ken is within walking distance (in walking shoes rather than Christian Louboutins).

Shepherds Bush will soon see the opening of one of the UK’s largest retail developments, to include the refurbishment of the underground and bus stations. When completed in late 2008 the centre will boast a retail floor area of 150,000m² (1.615m ft²;). The completed centre will feature around 270 stores, including House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, Waitrose, Next and a Cinema de Lux multiplex cinema.
Currently the Shepherds Bush W12 Centre has a multiplex cinema and a Peacock’s cheap retail outlet and also a Morrison’s, but not otherwise much of interest.

Brook Green itself is jealously guarded and watched over by the Brook Green Association, which ensures it remains a great amenity. The Green has tennis courts and a resident tennis coach – you can watch the young hopefuls being endlessly coached there or even play yourself – and a children’s playground.

There is plenty of scope for fitness freaks with at least four fitness membership clubs including the Fitness First and the Hogarth Club.

Transport

Brook Green is amazingly well served by public transport, which is one reason for its popularity. Both the city and the West End are in easy reach by bus or tube and it’s also easy to escape into the country down the M40 or M4. Heathrow is in easy driving distance and also at the end of the Piccadilly Line. There’s also the mainline station at Kensington Olympia. From Hammersmith Underground station, only five minutes up the road, the District, Piccadilly and Hammersmith and City Lines operate. Shepherds Bush is on the Central Line.

Buses: Many bus routes from Hammersmith Bus Station, in the same complex as the underground station

Resident Parking: Yes - zoned. Numerous pay and display bays too.

Congestion Zone: No - although do not stray to far east as you will enter the zone at Holland Park Avenue or Kensington High Street
