Barons Court, W14 and into W6
Barons Court, W14, just off the phenomenally busy A4 (Talgarth Road) is a bustling, incredibly active and also slightly rundown area which is cheaper and with a younger feel than nearby Kensington, and for this reason highly popular with younger buyers and young professional renters not least of all attracted by the area’s value as well as its public transport links both into town and out to Heathrow.
The area, built mainly in Victorian times for the fast-growing middle and professional classes, is full of imposing mansion flats such as those in Queens Club Gardens with communal tennis courts and gardens, large Victorian houses now mainly carved up into flats, and also rows of little terrace houses. There is not much new-build – nowhere to put it!
The main shopping and ‘happening’ area is Greyhound Road, W6 which is about 8 minutes’ walk away from Barons Court Tube Station. North End Road is full of antique and junk shops and the famous North End Road Market operates every day except Sunday. It’s loud, tatty, fun, friendly and bustling and noisy every day.
So far as wining and dining is concerned, The Colton Arms, 184 Greyhound Road, is a traditional-type pub with a cottage-style garden for outdoor drinking when weather permits. The Queens’ Arms is also in Greyhound Road and Barons Court has its long-established own pub theatre at The Curtain’s Up at 28a Comeragh Road, W14.
Barons Court is full of ethnic restaurants of all kinds. The Koh Thai and New Maharaja are both in Greyhound Road, the Seven Stars (Chinese) is at 355 Lillie Road, SW6 and the Villa Bombay is at 255 Munster Road, SW6. The famous (and very expensive) River Café is at Thames Wharf, Rainville Road, W6 and for vegetarians, the equally famous Gate is at 51 Queen Caroline Street, W6.
Particularly recommended are: the New Leaf and Blue Elephant Chinese Restaurants and the Continental Café.
Sport and leisure are well catered for with the Queens Club, Charing Cross Sports Centre and a Virgin Active Fitness Centre in Lillie Road. For music lovers, Opera Holland Park – and Holland Park itself – is only a short tube ride away.
LAMDA – the Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Art – is on the Talgarth Road, as is the senior section of the Royal Ballet School, so it is a highly theatrical area, away from London’s main theatreland.
The museums, exhibition centres, Olympia, and shopping centres of Kensington High Street and Knightsbridge are only moments away on the tube. Fulham Broadway shopping centre is also nearby. Barons Court is a great location in itself and is in easy reach of Central London and the M4 if you want to make a quick getaway to Heathrow or into the country.
Transport
Tube Stations: Barons Court (Piccadilly and District line) and West Kensington on the District Line.
Buses: No buses on the Talgarth Road, which is one of the busiest roads in Europe but Hammersmith Bus Station is only a short walk away, and night buses go to and from this station.
Cycling: Not advised on Talgarth Road yet Barons Court's location between Fulham, Kensington and Hammersmith makes cycling a viable option for many residents. As anywhere in London - don't even think about leaving your bike unattended!
