Connaught Square & Connaught Village W2
This was the first square of houses to be built in the Bayswater area and was named after the Duke of Gloucester who was also the Earl of Connaught. It consists mainly of four storey town houses which surround a private gated communal garden.
Very central indeed, the square is north of Hyde Park, within a few minutes’ walk of Marble Arch and Oxford Street and to the west of Edgware Road.
The square dates back to around 1820 although more recently it has become famous as the area where Tony Blair bought a £3.5 million house, no 29, in 2004. The house he bought is similar in style to No 10 Downing Street, and was used in the filming of the TV series Alan Clark’s Diaries.
The architecture is mainly Georgian and the square is very upmarket, very exclusive as can be deduced from all the expensive cars parked around the square. A garage specialising in classic cars is on the North side of the square.
Since Tony and Cherie Blair bought their house, there has been a considerable police presence and residents have been concerned about security arrangements in the area.
It is ideal for those who want gracious living, access to a fabulous garden they don’t have to maintain – although residents do have to pay for its upkeep – and for the fact that Oxford Street and Park Lane are in easy walking distance. Hyde Park is just opposite so although the area is so central, there is plenty of green space as well.
All the West End theatres are in walking distance or a short taxi ride away, and Connaught Square is probably the nearest you can possibly get to all the amenities of the West End yet still enjoy gracious, peaceful, secure living.
